The New Zealand Portrait Gallery was set up in 1990 to create a gallery for the New Zealand equivalent to similar historical and biographical museums in other democracies. First housed within New Zealand Archives, then within the Parliamentary precinct in Bowen House, it has not had a permanent home. However, from 2004 – 2009 it continued to mount exhibitions and to maintain a programme of other activities, including lectures, seminars and portrait competitions from its office in Turnbull House. In December 2009 it took a lease for the elegant Edwardian Shed 11 on Wellington’s waterfront, and The Trustees of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery are currently negotiating an extension of this until 2025.This will enable it to develop this space for a permanent museum dedicated to portraiture.
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery has a strong and active Friends’ Association and maintains close and effective links with international Portrait Galleries.
The Gallery shows the creativity of significant historical and contemporary artists. It reaches throughout New Zealand to encourage fresh new talent, in particular through the biennial competition the Adam Award. Attracting entries locally and internationally, the Adam Award has earned a reputation for quality and innovation in portraiture.
