Ryuzo Nishida

Thanks to http://www.seedgallery.co.nz

Ryuzo Nishida comments on social and cultural mores with a shifting voice. Constructed from hand painted toy soldiers and based on bonsai forms, Nishida’s recent works simultaneously invoke nostalgic memories from a collective unconscious, and suggest violence and cultural imperialism.

Pictured is Ryuzo's 2004 Adam Award winning self-portrait 'The Scream'. The painting was on the heads of small nails and a photograph does not do justice to the image.

Nishida completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at The University of Auckland in 2007. He has exhibited widely throughout Auckland over the past five years and received numerous accolades for his work - among them: first place in the Adam Portraiture Award in 2004, and finalist placings in the Walker and Hall Art Award in 2007, the Trust Waikato Contemporary Art Award in 2005 and 2004 and The Wallace Art Awards in 2004.
