

1.Artists must be New Zealand citizens or residents.
Limit of one entry per person. A work is not eligible for entry if :-
(i) it has been exhibited in New Zealand previously or
(ii) it has received any awards.
2.Entries must be painted portraits of identified people; the subject(s) New Zealand resident(s) or citizen(s)., and with emphasis on their Identity as Individuals.
3.Entry forms may be downloaded from this website or obtained by writing to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery at either of the addresses given below.
4.An Entry fee of $40 is payable and must accompany the Entry Form. The Entry fee is not refundable if work is not selected for hanging. Any entry not accompanied by an entry form and payment will not be eligible for the competition.
5.The competition is divided into two phases.
(i) Selection Phase : Artists submit their entries in the form of photographic images (slides, prints or digital imaging) for pre-judging which will take place in January 2008. Artists will be notified by mail whether their work has been selected or not. If their work has been selected, letters will be posted on Wednesday 30 January 2008. Instructions for submitting original works chosen for hanging and judging will be sent to artists with notification of selection.
(ii) Exhibition Phase: Artists who have an entry selected from pre-judging must then submit the original works by 13 February 2008. Hanging and final judging will take place in the week leading up to the opening of the Exhibition on Wednesday 20th February 2008, when the winner will be announced and the prize awarded. These works will be exhibited from Thursday 21st February until Sunday 30th March 2008 In the New Zealand Portrait Gallery In Shed 11 and subsequently may tour.
6. Initial entries (as above) accompanied by a completed entry form and entry fee must be received by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery by 10th December 2007,
7.Each entry must be clearly identified with the artist's name, address and title of work.
8.Each entry may be accompanied by an enlargement of a small area of the work.
9.Entries Including accompanying documentation will be retained and will form part of the gallery's records.
10.Entries should be packed appropriately. Postage and insurance costs are at the expense of the artist.

11.Exhibition and Sale
Artists whose work is selected for the exhibition can choose to offer the work for sale. This must be indicated when the work is submitted for hanging. The New Zealand Portrait Gallery (NZPG) will deduct commission on works sold. For those registered for GST, the commission will be 20% of the GST inclusive price. For those not registered for GST, 20% plus GST.
12. The NZPG and any venue showing the exhibition will take all reasonable care of exhibits but they shall not be liable for any loss of, or damage to, any of the works.
Each competitor is responsible for maintaining his/her own insurance cover against such risks.
13.The winner will be notified. The ADAM Portraiture Award will be presented at the gala opening on Wednesday 20 February 2008, to which all entrants will be invited.
14.The winning portrait will become part of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery permanent collection.
15.By entering the competition entrants
(i) warrant that they own the work submitted and that the copyright of the work is vested in them or, if this is not so, that the work is submitted with the permission of the current owner and/or holder of copyright, who has agreed that these be surrendered should the entry be adjudged the winner.
(ii) warrant that they have obtained the appropriate model releases from the person(s) featured in their submitted portrait;
(iii) agree that their work may be exhibited at any venue organised by the NZPG and that the portrait be available for a period of up to eighten months, in the event the exhibition/works tour;i.e. until 13 August 2009.
(iv) agree that the NZPG and exhibition sponsor shall have the right of free reproduction of all exhibited paintings for sales/publicity/educational and reference purposes in connection with the award; and
(v) if offered for sale, warrant that the work is theirs to sell and agree to accept the price they specify at the time of submission of the work (less commission).
16.The New Zealand Portrait Gallery reserves the right not to award the prize if no entry is considered deserving of an award.
17.The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Summary timetable.
Entries accepted: up to 5.00 p.m. on Monday 10 December 2007.
Pre-judging: will be completed by 28 January 2008.
Letters posted advising artists of selection will be sent out on Wednesday 30 January 2008.
Selected entries to be delivered to the Gallery: Wednesday 13 February 2008.
Gala opening and Prize Giving: Wednesday 20 February 2008.
