

Entries
1. Artists must be New Zealand citizens or residents.
2. Limit of one entry per person. A work is not eligible for entry if :-
(i) it has been exhibited in New Zealand previously or
(ii) it has received any awards.
3. Painted portraits must be of identifiable people and the subject(s) New Zealand resident(s) or citizen(s). "Portrait"can be interpreted in its widest sense of images concerned with the portrayal of people with emphasis on their identity as individuals.” Painted” includes oil, watercolour or acrylic.
4. Entry forms may be downloaded from our website at www.portraitgallery.nzl.org or obtained by writing to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, P O Box 5983, Wellington 6145 or emailing admin@nzportgal.org.nz .
5. An entry fee of $45 is payable for each entry and must accompany the entry form. The entry fee is not refundable if work is not selected for hanging. Any entry not accompanied by an entry form and payment will not be eligible for the competition.
The Competition
6. The competition will be divided into two phases.
a ) Selection Phase : Artists are invited to submit entries in the form of photographic images (slides, prints or digital imaging) for pre-judging which will take place between 10 Dec 2009 & 27 Jan 2010. Artists will be notified by mail (or email) as to whether their work has been selected or not. Those selected will be invited to enter the original work for the hanging and judging phase by 10 Feb 2010.
b) Hanging and Judging Phase : Artists who have an entry selected from pre-judging will be invited to submit the original works for hanging and final judging which will take place from 13th- 24th February 2010. These works will be exhibited for approximately four weeks and subsequently may tour.
Submission
7. Initial entries (as above) accompanied by a completed entry form and
entry fee must be received by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery by 4th December
2009.
Each entry may be accompanied by an enlargement of a small area of the work.
Each entry must be clearly identified with the artist’s name, address and
title of work. Initial entries and documentation will be retained and will form
part of the Gallery’s records.
8. Entries should be packaged appropriately. All postage and insurance costs are at the expense of the artist.

9. Instructions for submitting original works chosen for exhibition will be sent by 13 Feb 2010.
Exhibition and Sale
10. Artists whose work is selected for exhibition can choose to offer work for sale - this must be indicated when the work is submitted for hanging. The New Zealand Portrait Gallery (NZPG) will deduct a commission on work sold.
For those registered for GST the commission will be 20% of the GST inclusive price - for those not registered
for GST, 20% plus GST.
11. The NZPG and any venue showing the exhibition will take all reasonable
care of exhibits but they shall not be liable for any loss of, or damage to,
any of the works.
Each competitor is responsible for maintaining his/her own insurance cover
against such risks.
12. The winner will be notified. The ADAM Portraiture Award will be presented at the gala opening to which all entrants will be invited. The winning portrait will become part of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery permanent collection.
13. By entering the competition entrants
(i) warrant that they own the work submitted and that the copyright of the work is vested in them or, if this is not so, that the work is submitted with the permission of the current owner and/or holder of copyright as may be the case.
(ii) warrant that they have obtained the appropriate model releases from the person(s) featured in their submitted portrait.
(iii) agree that their work may be exhibited at any venue organised by the NZPG and that the portrait be available for a period of up to eighteen months, in the event the exhibition/works tour.
(iv) agree that the NZPG and exhibition sponsor shall have the right of free reproduction of all exhibited paintings for sales/publicity/educational and reference purposes in connection with the Award.
(v) if offered for sale warrant that the work is theirs to sell and agree to accept the price they specify at the time of submission of the work (less commission).
14. The judge reserves the right not to award the prize if no entry is considered deserving of an award.
15. The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
