"Time is getting short to get entries in for the 2008 Adam Portraiture Award" says NZ Portrait Gallery Avenal McKinnon, reminding artists that entries close on December 10. The biennial contest is open to all New Zealand residents or citizens.
"A cash prize of $15,000 is at stake for the winning portrait, and the last competition winner Freeman White, is a classic example of how such an award can be the stimulus for a career to develop" she said. After his 2006 win White was invited by the Adam Award judge James Holloway to Edinburgh where he has become the first New Zealand artist to have work in the prestigious Scottish National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. He has achieved a number of major commissions in Scotland and in Europe.
The 2008 contest will be judged by Dr Lilly Koltun, director of le Musée de Portrait du Canada and the exhibition will run from February 21 to the end of March in Shed 11 on Queens Wharf.
"The competition is an important forum for New Zealand portrait painters" Avenal McKinnon said, "and it is also a significant means by which the Gallery is able to build up a major collection of contemporary portraiture."
