During September & October 2009, when other art groups temporarily used the Gallery space in Shed 11, the New Zealand Portrait Gallery held a series of weekly illustrated portrait-related talks from four experts about the inside story of portraiture - those who capture it, make it, teach and talk about it, and conserve it

Wednesday 23 September 2009: Richard Wolfe Portraiture in New Zealand - Spectrum Theatre

Richard Wolfe, a freelance curator and the author of more than 25 books, has recently produced the magnificent book:”New Zealand Portraits” published by Penguin in 2008. Using illustrations, Richard discussed New Zealand’s history of portraiture as an art form.

Wednesday 30 September 2009: Dr Tony Bellette The Artist As Subject - Spectrum Theatre

Dr Tony Bellette was responsible for setting up the Art History Department at Victoria University of Wellington. A legendary lecturer, we are most fortunate to have enticed him back to Wellington from retirement in Tasmania to explore the self portrait and what it tells us about changes in the definition and status of the artist from the Renaissance to the present.

Wednesday 7th October 2009: Gaylene Preston Creating a Video Portrait - Spectrum Theatre

Gaylene Preston is a noted filmmaker with a particular talent for making documentaries. Gaylene formed Preston Laing Productions and has served on the Board of the New Zealand Film Commission and the New Zealand Film Archive. In 2006 she created a video portrait of Elizabeth Knox for the New Zealand Portrait Gallery and more recently has made the Rita Angus documentary “Lovely Rita, A Painter’s Life.”

Wednesday 14th October 2009: Detlef Klein Restoration & Conservation of Artworks - Spectrum Theatre

Detlef Klein is a German trained conservator expert in the restoration and care of our heritage and art. In an illustrated talk he will speak about storage, maintenance and preventive conservation planning.
